There are many varieties of websites, each specializing in a particular type of content or use, and they may be arbitrarily classified in any number of ways.
- Archive site: This kind of site is used to preserve valuable electronic content threatened with extinction. Archive sites may be accessed by anonymous FTP, Gopher, World Wide Web, or other services.
- Blog (or weblog) site: A blogsite (one word) is a website with a web application that integrates content from multiple sources, such as weblogs, syndicated blog feeds, discussion forums, FAQs, etc., to address specific organizational and audience needs.
- Business site: Business sites are used for promote business or services.
- Commerce site or eCommerce site: Ecommerce sites are used for buying and selling of goods and services, and the transfer of funds, through digital communications.
- Community site: This is a type of web site where persons with similar interests communicate with each other, usually by chat or forums.
- Database site: The database sites are used to search and display a specific database's content.
- Development site: Development sites main purpose is to provide information and resources related to software development, Web design and so on.
- Directory site: Directory site is the one that contains varied contents that are divided into categories and subcategories.
- Download site: Site that provides electronic content, such as software, game demos etc. for downloading.
- Game site: A site that is targeted to develop games and provide games for playing either free or paid.
- Information site: The site that provides content and information to the viewers either for free or commercial purpose.
- News site: News sites are entirely dedicated to provide news related contents.
- Pornography site: The site that is intended to show pornographic images and videos.
- Search engine site: A search engine is the one that is used to accept a users query and display query related sites to the user. One such search engine is google.
- Shock site: A shock site is a website intended to be offensive to most viewers, usually containing frightening and/or incredibly distasteful and crude content.
- Personal site: A site that contains personal information run by an individual or a small group (such as a family).
- Web portal site: A web site that provides a starting point, a gateway, or portal, to other resources on the Internet.
- Wiki site: A site which allows users to post things and also to edit them.
